Frances Stark (b. 1967, Newport Beach, CA) is a Los Angeles-based writer and artist known for her use of language as both content and material. Stark’s major exhibitions include the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2011); MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts (2010); Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2010); The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2009); Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham, United Kingdom (2009); Culturgest, Lisbon (2008); the 2008 Whitney Biennial, New York (2008); Van Abbe Museum, Eindoven, The Netherlands (2007); Tate Modern, London (2007); and Artpace, San Antonio (2006). Stark’s writings have appeared in exhibition catalogues and art publications such as Artforum, Frieze, and Parkett.
